Mayerling at ROH

Mayerling at ROH was not my idea. I was invited on a date and as all dates go with a 6-year-old at home, it came at a price which at this particular time was leaving after Act II. I leave it to ROH to describe the ballet:
‘Adult drama meets sublime choreography in Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece. A story of passion and madness based on historical fact.’
Incredibly interesting, fascinating even, I did not know anything about the story of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, neither did I know about his lover Mary and the Mayerling Incident (Mayerling as they say is the ballet equivalent of Hamlet for the lead male); spectacular costumes at the very beginning of Act I which took us to the wedding of Prince Rudolf and Princess Stephanie of Belgium, but that so-called story of passion smelled of rape and abuse to me and was rather unpleasant to watch, but as all dates with a 6-year-old at home go, it was of course a fantastic few hours out in the fresh air among adult people (see pic at the bottom of the post) if only for the discovery of SNOG!
